With the influx of data into sports, Strength and Conditioning (S&C) Coaches are increasingly expected to develop data analysis and visualization skills. This post discusses a new Sport Horizon course specifically designed for S&C coaches seeking to development their data science skills.
There's a notable surge in interest in business intelligence tools such as Microsoft PowerBI and Tableau for data viz amongst sports practitioners. Microsoft Power BI in particular appears to offer a middle ground between the constraints of Microsoft Excel, which is often pushed to its limits in sports science applications, and the intricate programming languages of computer science, such as R and Python.
Previously sports practitioners had to learn and develop these skills through generic courses and resources. Now, Sport Horizon offer courses tailor-made for sports professionals aiming to develop data analytics skills. Earlier this year, I chatted with Ciaran Deeley and Johannes Marthinussen from Sport Horizon about their Power BI and Tableau for Sports Scientists courses. This discussion included a demonstration of getting started with Microsoft Power BI, which you can watch here.
Now the guys are back with a new course: Power BI for S&C Coaches Level 1.
In the video (below), we discuss this new course and what S&C Coaches (and other practitioners) can expect to learn from participating. Shane Malone, who has recently joined Sport Horizon, also provided a demonstration that walked through the creation of an interactive Power BI dashboard, in this case visualizing countermovement jump (CMJ) team data.

FAQs on Microsoft PowerBI and Data Viz
What is Power BI?
Power BI is a business analytics service by Microsoft that provides interactive visualisations and business intelligence capabilities with an interface simple enough for end users to create their own reports and dashboards.
How is Power BI different from Excel?
While Excel is excellent for data manipulation, calculation, and small-scale data visualisation, Power BI is designed for more complex data analysis and visualisation, offering advanced features like interactive dashboards, real-time data updates, and AI-driven features.
How do I get started with Power BI?
To get started, download and install Power BI Desktop, connect to your data source (like an Excel file), and start creating your first report by selecting data fields and visualisation types. Watch the video for a step-by-step guide to getting started.
How can Sport Horizon courses benefit strength and conditioning coaches?
Their courses are tailored to the specific needs of an S&C Coach, teaching how to efficiently process and visualise data from various sources like gym attendance and strength and power testing to gain actionable insights and communicate effectively with coaches and players. They create courses especially designed for S&C coaches, sports scientists, and performance analysts alike.
